As a reader, I am so amazed after reading the poem “A Martian Sendsa Postcard Home” by Craig Raine. Mr. Raine is truly a talented writer andin this poem of his, he was able to describe some ordinary things in lifein extraordinary ways. For example, look at how he describes a mothertrying to calm her crying baby: “If a ghost cries, they carry it to their lipsand soothe it to sleep with sounds. And yet, they wake it up deliberately,by tickling with a finger.” Reading this poem of Mr. Craig Raine remindsme of the riddles or bugtong that I enjoyed guessing as a child. Icompletely appreciated reading this poem of his!

Read the critique about the story entitled “The Virgin” by KerimaPolotan Tuvera. “The author portrays Miss Mijares to be extra dutiful interms of personal sacrifice, as what was expected of a daughter. MissMijares sacrificed her youth in order to send her niece to college, take careof an ailing mother and remained single. Miss Mijares’ virginal state madeher more of a victim rather than a virtuous.”

The Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, was written sometime around 700 to800 AD. The poet often refers both to pagan gods, rituals and toChristianity. At times, the poet refer to the pagan concept of fate, Wyrd, and two lines later refer to the will of God, clearly an intermingling of theAnglo-Saxon's first religion, paganism, with a religion they adoptedbeginning in about 600 AD, Christianity. To understand this mix ofreligions in the work of literature, critics try to understand exactly howand when the Anglo-Saxon people were converted from paganism toChristianity
