Juneteenth is an important holiday in American history. It honors the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas found out they were free. This day marked a major milestone on the path to ending slavery throughout the U.S. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger of the Union army arrived in Galveston, Texas. He informed the enslaved people of Texas about the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation was a speech made by President Abraham Lincoln two years earlier, on January 1, 1863. It stated that enslaved people in many of the southern states were now free. President Lincoln gave this speech during the height of the Civil War. But by the time the Union soldiers made it to Texas, the Civil War had ended. It took over two years for this message to reach the people still enslaved in Texas! More than 250,000 people celebrated their newfound freedom on June 19. Soon after, many of these freed people decided to migrate to northern states to start a new life. But they continued to celebrate Juneteenth year after year and to share this holiday with their community. In 1872, a group of formerly enslaved people raised money to buy 10 acres of land near Houston, Texas. They named this land ‘Emancipation Park’. To this day, many Americans celebrate Juneteenth in this park to remember their history. Texas also holds a special parade to celebrate this day. Thousands of people participate and enjoy learning and celebrating African American culture and history. They fly the Juneteenth flag. The Juneteenth flag has a white star that symbolizes freedom and new hope for African Americans. Juneteenth is a day to remember the triumphs and struggles of African Americans. Even though enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom on Juneteenth, they still faced violence, discrimination and inequality. That is why Juneteenth celebrations are so important to many Americans. Juneteenth recognizes the hardships of gaining freedom and the importance of remembering Black history in the United States.
A DAY OUT TO REMEMBER!
When Bad Things Happen Today was not a good day. My pet lizard died. I don't understand why. I did everyłhing right. Izzy had a safe home. Izzy had clean water. Izzy had plenty of food. But he died. My dad said sometimes bad things happen, even when you do everything right. I understood what my dad told me. But I still felt bad. My mom said there were things I could do to help me feel better. She said some people make cards and then color them with bright colors. My dad said some people write a letter when they lose a friend. The letter tells about the good times they had together. He said I could write about how Izzy sał on my shoulder when I did my homework. He said I might share how Izzy loved to eat green beans. My grandmother said that some people go to a church or another place of worship. My mom said that some people light candles and pray. She said other people put flowers next to a photo of their friend. My dad said that whatever I did to remember Izzy would help me feel less sad. Mom added that in time I would feel much better. But she also said I might feel sad again some days along the way. I chose to make Izzy a card. I drew Izzy with a smile. I drew a big heart because I loved him. I wrote that I missed him. I wrote that I would remember him. Tomorrow we will bury Izzy. I chose a special place in the backyard. It is next to a clump of flowers. I will put his favorite rock there. I will put my card there, too. My dad was right. I do feel a little bit better. I will always miss Izzy, but I won't ever forget the good times we had together.

To stay warm, he kept himself moving and took short naps of less than a minute at a time. Every few hours, he called out to his loved ones: 'Just yelling out their names would pick me up and then I would keep going for the next hour and the next hour and the next.' When he woke the next morning, he couldn't believe he was still alive. Using his bright equipment, he tried to signal to planes that flew overhead. But as each plane turned away, his spirits dropped. He managed to drink water from his oxygen tank to keep himself alive, but as day turned to night again he started to imagine things. Robert woke on the third day to a beautiful blue sky. Now seven kilometres off the coast, Robert decided he had to swim for it. But the sun was so strong and Robert quickly ran out of strength. Hope turned to disappointment yet again: 'l felt disappointed in myself. I thought I was a lot fitter. I thought I would be able to do it.' Robert then started to think he might not survive. On the fourth day, the lack of food and water was really starting to affect him. Half unconscious, and with strange visions going through his head, he thought he saw a boat coming towards him with two of his friends in. Another vision, surely. But no - 'They put me in the boat and I said something like "Oh, how's it going, what are you guys doing here?"' Then he asked them the question that he'd asked in all his visions: 'Can I have some water?' As they handed him the water and he felt it touch his lips, he knew. This was not a vision. He'd been found! After four days and three nights alone at sea, Robert had been found! Sunburnt, hungry and exhausted, but alive.
