7.20.A Use Conventions Of Capitalization

Claire thinks that she should have a room of her own. She has written the following paper to express her opinion. Read Claire’s paper and look for any corrections she needs to make. Then answer the questions that follow.

A Room of My Own

(1) In January, I turned 13 years old. (2) I have shared a room with my little sister Megan for most of my life. (3) We are 5 years apart in age, and we have very little in common. (4) Megan is 8 years old and in the third grade. (5) My youngest sister Emma is now 5. (6) I think Megan and Emma should share a room.

(7) When Emma was born, mom and dad gave her the tiny room next to theirs. (8) They wanted her close so that they could hear her at night. (9) Megan and I shared a larger room, which was fine when we were 4 and 9. (10) But it’s not fine now. (11) I think it’s time for me to have my own room.

(12) There are several reasons I think we need to change the living situation in my house. (13) For one thing, Megan and Emma have similar schedules and interests. (14) They are both in elementery school, which begins earlier in the morning than middle school does. (15) This means they have to wake up earlier than I do. (16) They also play with many of the same toys and even share some clothes. (17) Emma is constantly in my room looking for Megan or borrowing something of Megan’s. (18) If they were in the same room, all there things could be in one place. 

(19) Also, sharing a room with Megan means that my room looks like a little girls room. (20) I’m tired of the pastel pink walls. (21) If I had my own room, I would paint it a color appropriate for a teenager and hang some posters without no Disney princesses and unicorns on them.

(22) Furthermore, Megan is messy. (23) She leaves her things on the floor, and I’m always having to pick them up. (24) But in my own room, everything would be put away neatly.

(25) Finally, I’m in middle school, which means that I have more homework then Megan does. (26) I need a quiet place to study and read. (27) Sometimes I need to talk about a homework assignment with a friend. (28) I don’t want to turn the lights off and be quiet at 8:00 P.M. when my sister has to go to bed. (29) And on weekends, I like to have friends over, I would love to be able to talk about teenage things without little ears listening to all my conversations.

(30) The current living arrangements is causing me a lot of stress. (31) I’m getting more and more frustrated with Megan, even though I realize that the situation isn’t her fault. (32) If we could be in seperate rooms, I know I would feel happier. (33) I think I would accept—and maybe even enjoy—my little sister again!

Detective Dog on the Job

(1) Many police forces currently partner dogs with officers to work on special tasks. (2) The dogs help track criminals, sniff out explosives, and find missing people. (3) Today specially trained dogs were also doing detective work for ordinary people.

(4) You’ve probably heard the saying “Home, sweet home.” (5) Home, however, isn’t so sweet when it’s plagued by pests or mold. (6) Agencies around the country are now teaching dogs to sniff out these kinds of problems in their earliest stages. (7) A human pest-control technician might not spot the first few bedbugs or termites in a house, but Jumpin’ Jack Flash, a bedbug-sniffing terrier from Pennsylvania, can smell it! (8) After five months of scent-detection training, Jack quickly and accurately leads his human partners straight to the culprits.

(9) Why are dogs perfect for this kind of job? (10) For one thing, they seem to love their work. (11) “Trust me” says Jack’s owner. (12) “That is all he wants to do. (13) He wants to find bugs.” (14) More importantly, a detective dog has a built-in tool—its nose! (15) Research shows that a dog’s sense of smell can be 1,000 times more powerful than a Person’s. (16) Within that moist, black button of a dog’s nose are about 220 million odor receptors. (17) In comparison, a human nose has only about 5 million. (18) José Peruyero is a Florida dog trainer, he explains that while a human can walk into a kitchen and know that a stew is cooking on the stove, a dog can be trained to distinguish a stew that has carrots in it from one that doesn’t.

(19) Another type of detective dog is being trained to save lives. (20) Millions of Americans—many of them children—have life-threatening food allergies. (21) Allergen-sniffing dogs can now help some of these people live safer, less worrisome lifes. (22) Several organizations are training dogs to detect mere traces of allergens, particularly peanuts and tree nuts. (23) Upon entering a room, a detective dog can immediately locate one crumb of a dangerous food. (24) Agencies place these dogs with people who have extreme allergies. (25) The mother of one child with a severity peanut allergy puts her faith in detective dog Rock’O and his trainers. (26) She says of these dogs, “There is no room for error. (27) They must detect certain allergens each and every time.

(28) Most of the trainers who work with detective dogs agree that these animals are happy, calm, and eager to work. (29) Whether the canines see tracking as their life’s purpose or simply as a fun game, they seem to be natural- born detectives.

The Replacement

(1) “I tell you,” Dad said to Mom, “it’s hard to let a good employee go. (2) But I had to do it. (3) The new machine can do the same job in half the time.”

(4) “No wonder unemployment is on the rise!” my mom said as she looked across the dinner table at my twin sister Lucy and me. (5) “Will there be enough work to go around when Lucy, Ivy, and Timmy start looking for jobs?” she asked.

(6) We had heard this conversation before. (7) Dad talked frequently about wanting to keep all his staff employed at Coe’s dry cleaners. (8) Like most young people, however, Lucy and I appreciated the benefits of technology. (9) We couldn’t identify with the heartache Dad felt when it came to substituting a device for a person. (10) It was just part of keeping up with the times.

(11) Dad’s dilemma prompted more discussion in the days ahead. (12) In fact, my sister and I became so interested in the topic that we decide to base our joint science project on the concept of increasing efficiency by replacing a human  worker with an automated one. (13) We just had to decide which employee to replace.

(14) The answer came to us one evening when Mom and Dad was out to dinner. (15) Lucy and I were in the den talking about our project, and our two- year-old brother Timmy was upstairs playing with his toy train. (16) Heather, his 17-year-old babysitter, sat in the living room doing her homework and eating an ice-cream bar.

(17) Lucy turned to me and said, “Heather isn’t doing anything for Timmy. (18) A robotic camera could do her job!

(19) With that, our project took shape. (20) An hour later we had designs and sketches for a robot, it could out-babysit any teenager! (21) We felt smug about our Electronic Child-Watcher. (22) There would be no more calling around to schedule a sitter, no more paying someone by the hour to do homework and eat snacks. (23) Now there would be an effective replacement that was always on call.

(24) Pleased with our work Lucy and I headed to the kitchen for a treat. (25) Heather, the human babysitter, was on the phone, and there was an urgency in her voice. (26) “Mrs. Coe,” she was saying, “I apologize for interupting your evening, but Timmy doesn’t seem like he feels well. (27) He’s listless, and he may have a fever. (28) It’s probably nothing to worry about, but I would rather be safe than sorry.”

(29) Heather noticed Lucy and me as she hung up. (30) I guess we looked scared. (31) “Don’t worry, girls,” she said, giving us each a hug. (32) “Your parents are on their way home. (33) My instincts just told me to give them a call.”

(34) I looked at Lucy. (35) Lucy looked at me. (36) We went straight to our room. (37) Where we crumpled up our robot diagrams and tossed the paper wads into the trash. (38) I scrolled through our plans on the computer and then quickly deleted them. (39) Some things, we realized, just can’t be replaced.

The Bugman Stumbles

(1) They call me the Bugman, and I wear my nickname proudly. (2) I’m a whiz at biology and especially knowledgeable when it comes to insects. (3) From aphids, beetles, and assassin bugs to butterflies, mosquitoes, and ordinary houseflies, I’m fascinated by them all. (4) You can ask me almost anything about insects, and I’ll happily answer. (5) Just please don’t ask me what happened in English class today.

(6) Even though I’m a science nerd, I’m also pretty good in English.  (7) I do have to work at it, though. (8) So imagine my reaction when I lucked out during todays’ vocabulary exercise.

(9) “This, ladies and gentlemen,” Mr. Potter announced as he held up a hat, “Contains all the words on your vocabulary list.” (10) The idea was for everyone to pick a word out of the hat. (11) Then we would have 15 minutes to look up the word and prepare a breif oral report on its meaning, origin, and alternate forms.

(12) With the entire vocabulary list displayed behind him on the board, Mr. Potter stirred the hat, and we all lined up for our turn to pick a word. (13) Some kids rolled their eyes when they opened their slips of paper, but not me. (14) When I unfolded mine I let out a whoop. (15) I couldn’t believe my good fortune. (16) My word was entomology. (17) Entomology! (18) That, my friends, just happens to be the branch of zoology dealing with insects.

(19) How was I going to spend my 15 minutes of preparation time? (20) I jotted down some notes about the word’s origin along with a couple of example sentences, the rest of the report would be a breeze. (21) I could talk about this topic for hours. (22) I didn’t even need to prepare. (23) I would just get up there, and the words would flow.

(24) Finally it was time for the oral reports, and I was up. (25) Confidently approaching the board, I said the word entomology allowed and wrote its definition in big, bold letters. (26) That’s when I heard a few giggles coming from the back row.

(27) “I know,” I said with a smile. (28) “What are the odds, right?” (29) It was pretty funny that I, the Bugman, had been the one to pick entomology. (30) I continued, next explaining the word’s origin. (31) Now more people were giggling. (32) The laughter seems to be coming from every corner of the classroom. (33) Even Mr. Potter looked as though he were holding back a grin.

(34) “That was an interesting report,” he said to an irruption of laughter. (35) “Brian, do you know the meaning of the word etymology?”

(36) At this point I was confused. (37) “Um . . . sure. (38) The word etymology means ‘word origin or history,’ ” I said. (39) “Why?”

(40) “Because,” said Mr. Potter, “that was the word you chose today.”

(41) My stomach dropped like a yo-yo. (42) I turned to the list of words on the board. (43) There it was: etymology. (44) A quick glance and my own wishful thinking had mistakenly convinced me that I had picked entomology.

(45) Even though English class ended hours ago, I’m still embarrassed when I think about my mistake. (46) But I learned something from it. (47) I should read important words and directions more carefully before I make assumptions. (48) I guess I can try to do that—even if I do sometimes have bugs on the brain.

What’s for Dinner?

(1) It’s a question asked almost daily at my house. (2) One by one, my brothers and I drag into the house after a day of school, sports, and study groups, hungry and ready to be fed. (3) And more often than not, my mothers’ answer brings a groan from at least one of us.

(4) “Meatloaf, ugh!” my younger brother moans.

(5) “Spaghetti! (6) Not again!” my older brother grumbles.

(7) I’m also guilty of being critical of what Mom puts on the table. (8) One Friday evening, she finally snapped. (9) As she began serving one of her famous casseroles, I made the mistake of asking, “didn’t we have this last week?” (10) Mom set the dish down and starred right into my eyes.

(11) “I’m tired of the daily disapproval,” she said calmly. (12) “It’s your turn to be the family cook. (13) I’ll provide you with a budget and drive you to the grocery store, but next week your in charge.”

(14) At first the idea of being the family cook sounded like fun. (15) I immediately began brainstorming meals—including all my favorites, of course—and making a list of what I would need from the store.

(16) Early Saturday morning Mom woke me up. (17) “It’s time to go shopping,” she said. (18) Sleepy but determinned, I crawled out of bed, got dressed, and headed to the store for the weekly shopping venture.

(19) “Here is the grocery money,” Mom said, handing me an envelope of cash. (20) “Make sure you stay within the budget.”

(21) “No problem,” I replied, confident that I had everything under control.

(22) I whizzed through the store, dropping one item after another into the shopping cart. (23) At the checkout the clerk began scanning my selections. (24) I watched as the total on the register climbed. (25) Glancing into my envelope, I began to worry. (26) The blood drained from my face when I realized that I wasn’t going to be able to pay for everything. (27) Enormously embarressed, I started selecting items to return. (28) There would be no brownies for dessert on Monday, no steak on Tuesday, no ready-to-bake lasagna on Wednesday, and no after-school sodas on any day that week.

(29) When I got home from school on Monday, I was already worn out. (30) But as soon as I plopped myself down on the couch, Mom asked, “What’s for dinner?” (31) I dragged myself into the kitchen and began cooking. (32) By the time dinner was over, it was 8:30, and I still had homework to do. (33) To make matters worse. (34) My brothers had complained during the entire meal. (35) The rest of the week wasn’t much different, and by Friday I was also running out of groceries! (36) Fortunately, Mom gave me a few tips on how to stretch the leftovers into another meal.

(37) As the week came to a close, I realized that I had learned a lot. (38) Budgeting, shopping, and cooking for a family of four isn’t as easy as it looks. (39) I had a new appreciation for all the hard work my mom does. (40) The next Monday when she announced “Tacos for dinner,” I was ready. (41) “Sounds great!” I enthusiastically responded. (42) And when my brothers started to complain, they got nasty looks from both my mother and I. (43) Next week one of them may be taking over the cooking duties.

On a recent trip to North Carolina, Monica visited a historic lighthouse. She wrote the following paper to share what she learned. Read Monica’s paper and look for the corrections she should make. Then answer the questions that follow.

Moving Day

(1) For more than 120 years, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has been warning ship Captains of shallow sandbars off the coast of North Carolina. (2) At about 208 feet tall, it’s the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. (3) But much has changed in the years since it was built. (4) For one thing, lighthouse keeper’s don’t fuel and maintain the lamp anymore. (5) Like most lighthouses today, Cape Hatteras is powered by electricity.

(6) Something else has changed, too. (7) When the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was first built, it stood 1,500 feet inland from the shore. (8) Storms and erosion slowly altered the shoreline, and by 1999 the lighthouse was just a few feet from the beach. (9) Clearly, it was only a matter of time before the lighthouse would fall into the sea.

(10) After much research and debate, experts decided that the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse must be moved farther inland. (11) They wanted it to be at least 1,500 feet from the shore, just as it had been in the beginning. (12) Moving the lighthouse would be no small feat, however, because it weighs 4,400 tons! (13) That’s about 110 times the weight of a fully loaded 18-wheeler.

(14) First the foundation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse had to be excavatted. (15) Steel rails were placed under the structure so that it could be inched along them with the help of hydraulic jacks. (16) Large crowds gathered to watch nervously as the lighthouse began to move inland. (17) Each steel rail that the structure rolled over were transferred from behind it to in front of it. (18) The first move measured a mere 2 inches, but it was enough to convince the movers that their plan was going to work. (19) The next effort shifted the lighthouse 5 more feet. (20) By the end of the first day, the lighthouse was more than 10 feet away from it’s original location.

(21) On the second day the lighthouse traveled another 71 feet. (22) Then all the beams and rails had to be repositioned for the next portion of the journey. (23) Moving the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was like playing a giant game of leapfrog. (24) By the end of the project, the lighthouse was traveling as much as 350 feet per day.

(25) Finally, after 23 days, the work was finished, and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was in a much safer place, 2,870 feet inland. (26) Today its beacon continues to shine, it warns ships of danger as it has done for more than a century.

Not So Bad

(1) Sometimes for me the anticipation of an event is much worse than the actual thing. (2) A trip to the dentist, a major test, a visit with Aunt Mildred—these all turned out to be not so bad. (3) But there are times when the actual thing is much worse than anything I could have anticipated. (4) That’s what I thought getting glasses would be like, I was certain it would be the end of life as I knew it.

(5) To be honest, I had always assumed that I would eventually need glasses. (6) My older brother wears them, as do both of my parents. (7) But when I realized I was having trouble seeing the board at school, my heart sinked. (8) My genetic makeup was showing itself. (9) I had hoped that maybe, just maybe, I could avoid the inevitable.

(10) Instead of telling my Mom, I asked the teacher to move me to the front of the room. (11) Sitting closer to the board helped for a while, but I knew it wasn’t a permanant solution. (12) A sense of dread started to build in me. (13) I was sure that I would look terrible in glasses. (14) And that all the kids would tease me. (15) I could not even bring myself to tell my parents. (16) But then I started missing shots at basketball practice. (17) That was totally unacceptable. (18) I knew that no matter how ridiculous I looked I needed to see the basketball hoop!

(19) I finally told Mom, and she took me to the eye doctor. (20) After the exam we headed straight to the store to pick out frames. (21) A high school kid was trying on a pair with thin black frames. (22) He looked good in the glasses, so I thought I might, too. (23) I pointed to them and said, “Those are the ones I want.” (24) A few days later we returned to the store to pick up my glasses. (25) As soon as I put them on, a new world opened up in front of me. (26) First I noticed that I could read the print on a poster across the room. (27) Then when I walked outside, I realized that I could see individual leaves on a tree across the street. (28) Later, as we pulled into the driveway at home, I was amazed to discover that I could distinguish the outline of the bricks on my house. (29) Everything looked so crisp and clear.

(30) I knew then that my glasses were actually a good thing, no matter what other kids might say. (31) However, when I got to school the next day, I was in for a surprise. (32) Very few people commented on my appearance. (33) The ones who did said things like “Cool glasses” and “Wow, you look good in those! (34) Not one person made fun of me. (35) I couldn’t hardly believe it! (36) The anticipation of this event really had been much worse than the actual thing. (37) In fact, the actual thing turned out to be pretty good.

A Space of My Own

(1) I would like to begin by telling you that I think you manage our house very well. (2) I know how hard you both work to provide for our family and to take care of us kids. (3) We’re happy and well-adjusted, and home is a good place to be. (4) But there’s one improvement I think we need to make. (5) I truly believe that it’s time for me to have my own room.

(6) I admit that I had enjoyed sharing a room with my little brother for the last six years. (7) We have the bond that I’m sure you hoped for when you bought the bunk beds and moved us in together. (8) But now that Jamal and I are both getting older, I fell that I’m ready for more privacy and a space of my own.

(9) Having my own room would give me the opportunity to become a better student. (10) My classes have become more demanding and will probably require even more concentration when I start high school in a couple of years. (11) My own room would provide a quieter place to do my homework. (12) I would also have a place to spread out materials and work on projects without getting in anyone elses way. (13) This would help me to be more focused, and as a result, my grades would improve.

(14) My own room would also give me a place to work on my music. (15) Mr. Owens, my Band Director, insists that I practice every night. (16) Sometimes I don’t have time for practice until later in the evening when Jamal is already in bed. (17) In a room of my own, I could play my trumpet without disturbing the rest of the family, and in time I would be a much better musican.

(18) Finally, I would like to have my own room so that my friends and I could have a place to hang out. (19) We like to listen to music, talk about sports, and sometimes even study together. (20) It’s hard to do these things in a room filled with Jamal’s toy cars, models, and action figures. (21) In fact, it’s hard to do these things with Jamal in the room. (22) But it’s not really fair to make him leave all the time, it’s his room too. (23) Giving me a room of my own would benefit both Jamal and me.

(24) I know that we don’t have a lot of extra space in our house, so I suggest that you allow me to move into the little guest room off the kitchen. (25) Because of its location, I would be able to study and play my trumpet at night without bothering Jamal. (26) When we need the room for guests, I’ll happily return to the bunk bed in my old room. (27) So in the best interest of my studies, my music, and my social life. (28) I respectfully request that you let me have my own room.

Junior Zookeeper

(1) “Choose one,” instructed my mother as she handed me a stack of brochures. (2) Every summer I was expected to get involved in some sort of activity. (3) I sighed, thinking how wonderful it would be to sleep late and just hang out with my friends. (4) But that was never an option in my house. (5) “You need to stay busy,” mom insisted while picking up a calendar and starting to plan my summer schedule.

(6) As I shuffled through packet’s of information about babysitting, first aid, and music courses, I came across something that stood out. (7) “Be a Junior Zookeeper” was printed on the front. (8) “Hmm,” I thought. (9) “This might actually be interesting.”

(10) The Junior Zookeepers program is a special opportunity that is offered each summer by our city’s zoo. (11) It’s for kids who love animals and want to learn more about what it’s like behind the scenes at the zoo. (12) I signed up for the program, and by the time it was over, I had not only experienced an adventure but had also learned that there’s a lot more to working at a zoo then just feeding animals.

(13) Professional zookeepers know all about animals—how they live in the wild, how they interact with one another, and how people can respect their habitats. (14) Educating kids and adults are one of the most important things these animal caregivers do. (15) As a Junior Zookeeper I was allowed to work with the kids who came to the zoo’s day camp. (16) I used flash cards, games, and videos to teach the children about the animals at the zoo. (17) For special lessons I even got to bring in some of the baby animals and use them in demonstrations.

(18) Of course, all zookeepers spend time every day caring for the zoo animals. (19) Each week, I got to shadow different zoo workers, they would be taking care of their assigned animals. (20) Although the animals were different, the daily tasks of each zookeeper were surprisingly simular. (21) The day usually started with preparing food for the animals. (22) Workers carefully chopped, mixed, and weighed the food so that the animals would receive just the right types and quantities to stay healthy. (23) As the zookeepers and I made our rounds each day, we carefully observed the animals for any physical or behavioral changes. (24) I loved seeing how some of the animals recognized their keepers and came to greet him.

(25) The best week of the summer was the one I spent in the animal nursery and hospital. (26) This is where the baby animals go to grow and where hurt animals gotten a chance to rest and heal. (27) I interacted with some really special animals there. (28) I watched a baby howler monkey, drink milk from a bottle, and comforted a small snow leopard that had been injured in a fall.

(29) My summer as a Junior Zookeeper is something I’ll never forget. (30) I learned so much about what goes on at a zoo. (31) I always used to shrug my shoulders when people asked me what I want to be when I grow up. (32) But now I know. (33) I’m going to be a zookeeper!

Happy Monday!

(1) When it comes to days of the week, Monday has a bad reputation. (2) I surveyed friends, and the results were overwhelming. (3) When asked which day of the week they like the least, 90 percent of my respondents chose Monday. (4) Not one person selected Monday as his or her favorite day. (5) Songwriters has even written lyrics about dreading Mondays. (6) In the 1960s a musical group had a hit titled “Monday, Monday.” (7) They sang, “Every other day of the week is fine, yeah. (8) But whenever Monday comes, you can find me crying all of the time.” (9) I don’t agree with all these sentaments. (10) In fact, I think that Monday is actually the best day of the week.

(11) First of all, consider all the good things that happen on Mondays. (12) If you are a sports fan, you may get to watch Monday Night Football in the Fall. (13) Furthermore, quite a few legal holidays, including Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day, they are celebrated on Mondays. (14) That means that several times a year, a Monday provides a three-day weekend. (15) And according to consumer websites Monday is the best day to get a good deal on a car because there aren’t as many people shopping on the first day of the workweek.  (16) Experts say that you can also get the best online deals on Mondays. (17) This is especially true for electronics, such as computers, TVs, and video games.

(18) To me, however, there’s something even more important about Mondays. (19) Each Monday symbolizes a new beginning. (20) For example, last week I got behind on my homework, and had to spend the weekend catching up. (21) But as soon as Monday arrived, I had a clean slate. (22) Another week I forgot to do some of my chores, so I had to forfeit going to a movie with my friends. (23) Once Monday came, my parents gave me a fresh start. (24) I also love Mondays because we frequently start new lessons at school at the beginning of the week. (25) While last weeks topics may have been boring, Monday can bring a new book to read, experiment to conduct, or math concept to tackle.

(26) I realize that I was probably not going to convince everyone that Monday is the best day of the week, but hopefully I can encourage a few people to change their attitude.
