Historyof Marikina’s Shoe Industry
Theshoemaking industry in Marikina started in 1887 through theeffort of Don Laureano Guevarra, known as Kapitan Moy, with the help of hisfriends Tiburcio Eustaquio, Ambrocio Sta Ines, and Gervacio Carlos. Kapitan Moydiscovered the art of shoemaking after fixing his own pair of imported shoes.He trained himself and mastered the craft. Later, he decided to open afamily shoe business at the ground floor of their house. He taught theresidents the shoemaking skills until it became an alternative source of incomefor Marikenos. Because of this, he became the Father of the Shoe Industry.
In1956, Marikina became the Shoe Capital of the Philippines becauseof its progressive shoe industry and being the biggest manufacturer of shoes inthe Philippines; producing almost 70% of shoe production in the country.
Marikina is also the home ofthe World’s Largest Shoes that measure over 17 feet long and 8 feet wide,certified by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2002. It took 77 daysto finish the shoes and cost over 2,000,000 Philippine pesos.
Historyof Marikina shoe industry can be viewed through the displayed of old equipment,photos, and samples of shoes made in Marikina in Marikina Shoe Museum.Most of the famous shoes of former First Lady Imelda Marcos were preserved inthis museum. Shoe collections of several famous people including a pairof shoes from the former presidents of the Philippines, former mayors ofMarikina, celebrities, ambassadors, and other politicians were also housed there.
