At the Movies
Movies are made up of pictures and sound. Actors speak their lines, but there is another important sound happeningâbackground music. This music is known as a filmâs score. The score is as important as any other part of a movie, because it helps provide the mood for a scene.
The score can add the extra âpunchâ to make a movie a success. Does the script call for feelings of awe or mystery? Sorrow or anger? Tension or joy? Filmmakers can provide a real sense of excitement or nervousness by adding music that has a quick rhythm. By emphasizing the mood, music can express the same emotions caught by the camera lens.
Music can also show changes in location. You can change from a quiet forest scene to a noisy city street with the help of different styles of music. Sometimes music can even replace the actorsâ dialogue.
Although it will never replace the camera as the filmmakerâs favorite tool, music serves an important purpose in movie making. If the pictures are what make the meal, it is the music that provides the spice to flavor it.
