Darby's Birthday Party Darby the dog's birthday was just two days away. On Friday, Darby would be 15 years old. That is old for a dog. "What shall we plan for Darby's birthday?" asked Mia. "It is just two days away, and we haven't planned anything." "We'd better think of something fast," said Mike. "Darby will be unhappy if we do nothing on his birthday. We always do something for Darby's birthday." "Shall we have a party? Shall we take him to the park? Shall we take him to the beach?" asked Mia. "Or shall we take him on a hike? It is a special birthday because Darby will be 15 years old." "We must plan a special party for Darby," said Mike. "We have always had a party for Darby on his birthday. And he will be 15 years old. We have to plan a very special party." "Let's make a list," said Mike. "Who shall we invite to Darby's party? What shall we have to eat?" "Where shall we have the party? What shall we do for fun? What games shall we play?" Mike and Mia planned a special party for Darby. They invited Darby's favorite friends. They planned Darby's favorite games. And they shopped for Darby's favorite food. But they did not know where to have the party. Mike and Mia went to the park. "Is this a good place for the party?" asked Mia. "No," said Mike. "It is not special." They went to the beach. "Is this a good place for the party?" asked Mia. "No," said Mike. "It is not special." They went to the woods. "Is this a good place for a party?" asked Mia. "No," said Mike. "It is not special." They went to the mall. "Is this a good place for a party?" asked Mia. "Not for a dog," said Mike. Soon it was Friday. It was the day of Darby's birthday party. Where did they have the party? At the zoo, of course. It was Darby's favorite place. Darby saw all of his zoo friends. And they all sang, "Happy Birthday to Darby."

Betty is an American girl. She's 13. She lives in Beijing with her parents. She doesn't know much Chinese. She can't speak Chinese well. Sometimes her friend doesn't understand her. Last Sunday morning, she went to the zoo to see pandas. She was waiting at a bus stop. At the bus stop she asked a boy how to go to the zoo. But the boy didn't understand her. Then she took out a pen and a piece of paper. She drew a panda on the paper and showed the picture to the boy. The boy smiled and then showed her the way to the zoo.
Emma: Look at that giant elephant! It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever seen! Tom: Yes! That giant animal is a mammal. Emma: Is it alive? Tom: Yes! It’s moving and eating. It’s really alive. Emma: Elephants have no fur, right? Tom: Right. But lions do. Lions have thick fur. Emma: What other animals have fur? Tom: Cats, dogs, and monkeys have fur too. Emma: Birds are different. They are covered with feathers. Tom: Yes, birds are not covered in fur like mammals. Emma: Look at the monkey! It’s using its hand to groom its baby. Tom: Monkeys groom each other to stay clean. Emma: That baby monkey is cute! It’s the mother’s offspring, right? Tom: Yes! A baby is called an offspring. Emma: When I grow up, I will be an adult who helps animals. Tom: Me too! I want to be a zoo adult who feeds and grooms animals. Emma: Monkeys are funny. I like mammals the most. Tom: Me too. They are smart and fun to watch.
Astonishing Animals Our planet is full of weird and wonderful creatures. Meet three of them – animals with surprising bodies, habits and abilities. The animal that can’t be true When in 1798 zoologists in Britain first saw the skin of an Australian platypus and a drawing of the animal, they were sure it was a hoax. A creature like that could not exist. Why not? First, it has fur, like cats or dogs, but also a flat bill like a duck, and a big thick tail like a beaver. Secondly, it lays eggs and looks after them like a bird, but when the young come out of the eggs, the mother feeds them with her milk. On top of everything, the platypus has a poisonous sting – like a snake! It cannot kill a human, but it’s very painful. Champion Runner You probably know the cheetah is the fastest runner among animals. It can run up to 100 kilometres per hour. But after some 200 metres, it needs to lie down and rest. The pronghorn, which lives in the prairies of North America, can run a few kilometres at ninety kilometres per hour, and fifteen kilometres at sixty-five kilometres per hour. Its whole body – heart, lungs, legs – is a perfect machine for long-distance running. But why? It doesn’t need to run this fast now, but 18,000 years ago there were cheetahs in America. The pronghorn probably evolved to escape them. This beautiful animal is not well-known in Europe, but in America it is a symbol of the prairie life. You can see it in the emblem of the province of Alberta, Canada. Aliens in the ocean An octopus has no fixed shape or colour. In danger, it will change both. It can become like its surroundings and difficult to see. Or it can look like a dangerous animal, such as a sea snake, and scare an attacker away. Octopuses are also intelligent. Their brains are large in proportion to their body size. They can use tools and solve problems: for example, open bottles to get food, or use clever strategies to escape from an aquarium. It seems they are unhappy in a zoo or lab. But they are so different from humans that it is difficult for us to understand their intelligence. In fact, it is a bit like meeting intelligent aliens.
