Hindemith wrote his Harp Sonata in 1939 for Italian harpist Clelia Gatti Aldrovandi. There is much dispute about whether the last six bars of the second movement should be played pianissimo or fortissimo. In his first sketch, he clearly marked it ff, in the handwritten manuscript, however, it was omitted. Was that deliberate, or an oversight?â
Aldrovandi had played the sonata from the manuscript, and was therefore accustomed to playing it ff. Somewhat taken aback by the harpists at the 1st Israel Harp Competition playing it pp, she wrote to Hindemith to enquire about which dynamic he wanted. Rather abruptly, he had his publisher write to her with the answer "Sie soll bitte auf ihr privates fortissimo verzichten". (She should resist playing her private fortissimo). â

In which language did Aldrovandi and Hindemith normally write their letters?
