Nature Stinks! Stinky Nature. If you've ever smelled a skunk, you know it is not a nice odor. In fact, it's terrible! Did you know that both plants and animals can smell bad? Stinky plants smell bad to get helpful insects to come near. Stinky animals often smell bad to keep enemies away. Smelling bad helps both plants and animals stay alive. Stinky Furry Animals Skunks are well-known smelly animals. When enemies get close, skunks lift their tail and spray a stinky liquid. Striped polecats are cousins of skunks. They stink even worse! Lesser anteaters are at least four times as stinky as a skunk! They shoot a smelly liquid at their enemies. Opossums pretend to be dead if an enemy is near. They stay still and let out stinky green slime. Wolverines make a smelly liquid to keep other animals away from their home. They also pee on food they don't eat right away. The smell may help them find the food later. It may also keep other animals from eating it. Male musk oxen fight each other for females. Males use their stinky pee to tell other males to keep away. The pee sticks to their long belly hair and makes them smell terrible. Stinky Birds. The stinkbird mainly eats leaves. Food goes to its crop (the area under its throat) before the stomach. Tiny living things there break down the leaves. This way of eating makes the stinkbird smell terrible. Vultures eat animals that are dead and often rotten. When vultures are in danger, they throw up! The stuff they throw up is very smelly. Stinky Bugs. A type of beetle sprays a hot, stinky liquid from the back of its body. The spray can kill many enemies and burn people. Millipedes (MILL-ih-peedz) can't move fast. If an enemy bothers them, they curl up and give off a stinky liquid. Some millipedes can even shoot the smelly stuff! Other Stinky Animals. The common musk turtle has another namestinkpot! It smells bad when other animals disturb it. A stinky yellow liquid comes out of the back of its body. Musk turtle A female mink frog can lay 500 to 4,000 eggs at once. 14 A musk turtle can live forty to sixty years. Mink frog The mink frog also uses smell to stay safe from enemies. It smells like rotten onions. Good and Stinky. Being stinky helps many plants and animals stay alive. For plants, the bad smell brings helpful insects. For animals, the bad smell may keep enemies away or help in other ways. Stinky steam, spray, throw-up, slime, and pee all help living things stay alive.

Nutrition refers to the science that deals with the various factors of which food is composed and the way in which proper nourishment is brought about. It is therefore important to learn more about nutrition, taking into consideration the three (3) important factors: a. the food we eat b. the way it is digested, absorbed and used in the tissues of the body c. the kind of people for whom the food is intended Good health or âwellnessâ is not a matter of chance. Good health is a product of good nutrition which is the result of an adequate supply of essential nutrients in your body. Lack of these nutrients lead to illness or a condition known as âmalnutritionâ. Malnutrition occurs if there is an imbalance intake of nutrients or an inadequacy of one or any of the nutrients. Malnutrition are manifested in the following cases: 1. obesity due to overeating- Obesity occurs when a person eats more than what the body requires under normal condition. This results in an excess supply of calories that leads to obesity or overnutrition. 2. stunted growth of children due to lack of protein- If there is no sufficient supply of carbohydrates or fats protein is used by the body as an alternative source of energy. 3. under weight due to lack of carbohydrates- If the total amount of nutrients provided by the diet is insufficient , it results to undernutrition. What is good nutrition? Food habits mean oneâs attitude towards food. If the body is fed by junk foods and became over/under supplied with particular vitamins, protein or other nutrients then the body will suffer from malnutrition. Let us identify the factors affecting food habits. ďˇ Education â knowledge about nutrition will help one to make wise decision about food. ďˇ Foods available - The kinds of food available to you usually are the foods you eat. Some foods can grow only in certain types of geographic locations and this determines the foods available in such locations ďˇ Religion - What foods people can eat or cannot eat have been dictated by their religious beliefs. For example, Moslems do not eat pork because Islam forbids them to eat it. Meal management practices affect food habits because you can only prepare and eat foods you can easily cook with the facilities and the knowledge you have. Food habit refers to the way in which different people select , cook, serve and eat food that are available to them. 1. Eat slowly, chew your food well. It takes twenty (20) minutes before your stomach sends a clear message to your brain that you're full. Take your time and savor the flavor of your meal. 2. Eat well When your body doesn't receive the required nutrients, your metabolism slows down. Metabolism is the rate at which you burn calories while resting. So, if you don't eat enough, fewer calories will be burnt and there will be less fat loss. You should eat small meals at regular intervals to keep your energy levels high. 3. Eat less red meat Red meats are high in saturated fat and should be avoided by people with high cholesterol. Chicken and fish are the best meats to consume. These meats can be baked, grilled or roasted. 4. Eat more fiber foods Add fiber to your diet, this adds bulk to your food and prevents constipation. Whole grain foods like oatmeal, bran, wheat germ and brown rice, fruits, especially with skins, prunes, etc, are all Seven (7) healthy eating habits for your guidelines: How you eat your food is as important as what you eat. Fiber helps in binding cholesterol, which results to less production of bad cholesterol. 5. Have calcium-rich foods Aside fro milk other sources of calcium and protein are red kidney beans, mustard greens, etc. Proteins can be found in meats, sprouts, soya, etc. 6. Eat foods that contain iron These include liver, fruits like watermelon, vegetables like spinach, beans, beets and broccoli, whole grains, dried fruits, especially prunes, sunflower seeds, etc. 7. Relish the flavors You may have heard some of these before. But the best good food habit, which we all seem to overlook, is to actually taste and enjoy the flavor of the food with your emotions instead of just your tongue. How can we prevent malnutrition? Following are the checklists of steps to prevent malnutrition. ďź Nutrition campaign on the importance of food nutrients. ďź Proper selection, preparation and serving of well-balanced meals. ďź Vegetable gardening in schools and at home. ďź Intensive program from the government especially for the less privileged members of the community.

For many people modern life keeps getting busier and busier. Doctors warn that people with very busy lifestyles are more likely to have negative feelings that may cause diseases and other health issues. A busy lifestyle does not always lead to stress, however. Some people have a relaxed attitude toward life that can help reduce its negative effects. Other people have healthy habits â such as regular exercise â that can also help to reduce stress. And others eat foods that are good for them. A diet that mainly consists of plant-based sources of nutrition such as vegetables, fruits, and nuts can reduce or even prevent some health problems. As long as the birth rate of a population exceeds the death rate, the population size will continue to increase. At a steady, positive per capita growth rate, the population will add a larger number of indi- viduals with each generation. So, a population can increase rapidly with even a small growth rate. A pattern of increase in number due to a steady growth rate is called exponential growth. The observa- tion that populations can grow in this pattern is called the exponential (EKS-poh-NEN-shuhl) model of population growth. One way to understand the exponential model is to study a graph of population size over time. A graph of exponential growth makes the characteristic J-shaped curve shown in Figure 19-6. With expo- nential growth, population size grows slowly when it is small, but growth speeds up as individuals join the population. The exponen- tial model leads us to predict that the population size will increase indefinitely and by a greater number with each time period. Applying the Exponential Model A scientific model is useful if it helps to predict or explain pat- terns that can be observed in reality. Indeed, the exponential model matches observed patterns of growth of real populations, but only under certain conditions and for limited periods of time. For example, a population of microorganisms can grow exponen- tially if provided with an abundance of food and space and if waste is removed. Figure 19-7 shows the growth of bacteria in a laboratory. However, the exponential model does not apply to most popu- lations. In natural environments, populations cannot grow indefi- nitely because the resources they depend on become scarce and harmful wastes accumulate. Any factor, such as space, that restrains the growth of a population is called a limiting factor. All populations are ultimately limited by their environment.SPECIES INTERACTIONS Just as populations contain interacting members of a single species, communities contain interacting populations of many species. Many species have specific types of interactions with other species. This chapter introduces the five major types of interactions among species: predation, competition, parasitism, mutualism, and commensalism. These categories are based on whether each species causes any benefit or harm to the other species in a given relationship. PREDATION In predation (pree-DAY-shuhn), an individual of one species, called the predator, eats all or part of an individual of another species, called the prey. Predation is a powerful force in a community. The relationship between predator and prey influences the size of each population and affects where and how each species lives. Examples of predators include carnivoresâpredators that eat ani- malsâand herbivoresâpredators that eat plants. Many types of organisms can act as predators or prey. All heterotrophs are either predators or parasites or both. Predator Adaptations Natural selection favors the evolution of predator adaptations for finding, capturing, and consuming prey. For example, rattlesnakes have an acute sense of smell and have heat-sensitive pits located below each nostril. These pits enable a rattlesnake to detect warm- bodied prey, even in the dark. Many snakes use venom to disable or kill their prey. A venomous rat- tlesnake is shown in Figure 20-1. Other predator adaptations include the sticky webs of spiders, the flesh-cutting teeth of wolves and coyotes, the speed of cheetahs, and the striped pat- tern of a tigerâs coat, which provides camouflage in a grassland habitat. Many herbivores have mouthparts suited to cutting and chewing tough vegetation. A predatorâs survival depends on its ability to capture food, but a preyâs survival depends on its ability to avoid being captured. Therefore, natural selection also favors adaptations in prey that allow the prey to escape, avoid, or otherwise ward off
Escape from Unsuitable Conditions Some species can survive unfavorable environmental conditions by escaping from them temporarily. For example, desert animals usually hide underground or in the shade during the hottest part of the day. Many desert species are active at night, when temper- atures are much lower. A longer-term strategy is to enter a state of reduced activity, called dormancy, during periods of unfavorable conditions, such as winter or drought. Another strategy is to move to a more favorable habitat, called migration. An example of migration is the seasonal movements of birds, which spend spring and summer in cooler climates and migrate to warmer climates in the fall. THE NICHE Species do not use or occupy all parts of their habitat at once. The specific role, or way of life, of a species within its environment is its niche (NICH). The niche includes the range of conditions that the species can tolerate, the resources it uses, the methods by which it obtains resources, the number of offspring it has, its time of reproduction, and all other interactions with its environment. Parts of a lionâs niche are shown in Figure 18-6. Generalists are species with broad niches; they can tolerate a range of conditions and use a variety of resources. An example of a generalist is the Virginia opossum, found across much of the United States. The opossum feeds on almost anything, from eggs and dead animals to fruits and plants. In contrast, species that have narrow niches are called specialists. An example is the koala of Australia, which feeds only on the leaves of a few species of eucalyptus trees. Some species have more than one niche within a lifetime. For example, caterpillars eat the leaves of plants, but as adult butter- flies, they feed on nectar. Plants and animals are able to share the same habitats because they each have different niches. In an ecosystem, energy flows from the sun to autotrophs, then to organisms that eat the autotrophs, and then to organisms that feed on other organisms. The amount of energy an ecosystem receives and the amount that is transferred from organism to organism affect the ecosystemâs structure. PRODUCERS Autotrophs, which include plants and some kinds of protists and bacteria, manufacture their own food. Because autotrophs cap- ture energy and use it to make organic molecules, they are called producers. Recall that organic molecules are molecules that con- tain carbon. Most producers are photosynthetic, so they use solar energy to power the production of food. However, some autotrophic bacteria do not use sunlight as an energy source. These bacteria carry out chemosynthesis (KEE-moh-SIN-thuh-sis), in which they use energy stored in inorganic molecules to produce carbohydrates.
