Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that follows:
Robin Everdeen was a manager on Molloy Island, a tiny haven at the convergence of the Black wood and Scott rivers in Western Australia. Quite often, he would leave his maintenance duties and ferry cars across the river to and from the mainland, the only means of public access to the island.
One morning, a car driven by an elderly islander approached the ferry. Rob waved him on. The stillness of the area was broken by the sudden roar of the car’s engine. The car accelerated fast, sped across the entire length of the ferry and snapped the chains on the other side of the ramp before taking out the gate and shooting 15 meters into the Blackwood River.
Rob watched in shock as the car spun 180 degrees on impact with the water, its bonnets now facing him as he stood on the ferry. The car remained upright, but it was rapidly taking on water and sinking fast.
The driver, who was in his late 70s, could not swim and appeared terrified. Rob thought quickly. The car was sinking fast, and he knew he would have no chance of opening the doors once the car was underwater. The only option would be to pull the driver out of the window before the car’s electronics stopped working. “Leave the windows open, I’m going to get you out,” he shouted. However, the frantic driver had already closed the windows by then to stop the water from flowing into the car any further.
Rob rushed to the ferry controls, pressed the button and the ferry jerked off the jetty, in the direction of the car which was almost entirely submerged, nose down in the water. The rear passenger window was visible. Rob searched for signs of the driver. There was none. He grabbed a hammer and lay down on the ramp alongside the car. Next, he smashed the rear passenger window and showed his arm through. “Grab me! “he shouted, unsure if the driver could hear him through the swirling water. A hand grabbed his arm. The driver had managed to scramble over the seat into the back of the car. Rob wrenched him up. “Take a big breath,” he told him. “Don’t panic, I’ve got you. When I start to pull, give the car a push with your legs.” The driver did exactly as he was told. He shot out of the window, like a cork out of a bottle and Rob pulled him up onto the ferry.
He was shivering with cold, and not able to speak at first. But he cried, ' My puppy is still in the car!”
By now, the car had been underwater for 10 minutes. All that was visible was the rear window. Surely there could be no hope.
Rob rushed backdown the ramp and smashed the rear window with the hammer, feeling through the glass for any sign of life. His heart leaped when his fingers came in contact with fur. Somehow, the pup had found an air pocket up against the window and was alive. Rob pulled the puppy out.
