Water: • Water washes away soil when it rains. • Loose soil is washed away into dams and rivers. • Steep slopes also lead to soil erosion. • Ploughing 2 . Wind • The blowing away of soil by wind causes soil erosion. • When people cut down trees wind erosion easily takes place. • Type of soil also leads to wind erosion. Animals • Animal cause soil erosion by overgrazing. • Overgrazing is when animals eat plant or vegetation leaving the ground surface bare. • Animals walking on the same pathway for a long time make the soil loose. • Animals that live underground also burrow loosening the soil. • This makes soil break easily and get washed away. Natural rains: • rain water from the clouds is a primary source of water. • It is used to water crops such as maize, millet, sorghum and so on during the rainy season. • Rain water that collects into the rivers and dams is used by animals and people for drinking. 2 . Rivers : • Rivers are some of the major sources of water for different activities such as fishing, boat cruising and irrigation. 3 . Streams : • A stream is a small river. • Streams supply water for irrigating garden crops especially in rural areas. • They are also a source of water for animals to drink and bath. Springs : • Springs are usually found on hilly areas. • They result from pressure of underground streams. • The pressure forces water underground to form a channel to the surface of the soil and flow above the ground. They decided to make structures which would harvest or collect and store water for future use. 1.Protected well: • Wells are dug in the ground by hand. • They are often lined with bricks and concrete so that they do not cave in. • Protected wells are covered, therefore are safe to drink from. 2 . borehole : • They are deep holes made by drilling machines. • Drilling can be done up to 70 metres deep. • Water is pumped using an electric pump or hand pump. Sources of Water 3 . Dams : • A dam is a large wall or barrier built to hold water to save it for future use. 4 . Weir : • A weir is made by construction a cement brick wall or concrete wall across a river to trap water and eroded soil. • water flows over the wall when the river is inflood. 5 .Water tank : • Is a temporary manmade water source. • Water from a water tank is usually harvested from roof tops or it works along a borehole or protected well as temporary storage. • Water is pumped from the borehole or protected well into the water tank. 6 . reservoir : • A large natural or manmade lake used as a source of water. Agricultural equipment technicians maintain, install and repair machines and implements. When they detect a malfunctioning equipment, they perform diagnostic tests and conduct necessary repairs. e. Purchasing agents are responsible for buying agricultural products and raw materials at wholesale for processing and reuse. These professionals often have to meet specific purchasing quotas for processors. They work with several farming clients, who serve as suppliers of grain, milk and other agricultural products. f. Farm warehouse managers are responsible for overseeing all activities related to storing, shipping and receiving agricultural materials. BEE COLONY Inhabitants of the bee colony and their roles • A honey bee colony typically consists of three kinds of adult bees: workers, drones and the queen 1. Workers • Workers are the smallest and constitute the majority of bees occupying the colony. • They do not lay eggs. • Workers have specialized structures, such as brood food glands, scent glands, wax glands, and pollen baskets. • these allow them to perform all the labors of the hive. Water harvesting and storage Water is very important for life on earth. People, plants and animals all need water to live. There is always not enough water in rivers and streams for farmers to use. Water harvesting is collecting rain water and storing it to be used later. We can divert rivers and build structures such as dams and tanks to store water. METHODS OF WATER HARVESTING 1.Harvesting from rooftops: Rainwater that fall on roofs, roads and pavements can be collected, instead of letting it run into the ditches. One way to do this is to use water storage tanks. Rain runs off the roof into the gutter and then into the water tank. 2. Damming rivers. Farmers may also build dams to store water to use to irrigate their crops and water their livestock. Some communities block rivers to harness water. The water might be pumped into tanks They can then use the water to water their crops and animals to drink 4. Making pits and open reservoirs •If water tanks are too expensive, people can dig big pits and make open reservoirs. •These reservoirs not only collect rainwater, but also allow rainwater to seep into the ground and raise the ground water level. 5. Road drains Rain water can be harvested from roadside drains then led to storage tanks or encouraged to sink into the soil to increase the water table 5. We grow crops or plants for many reasons. •Crops can be damaged which leads to reduced yields. •Therefore farmers need to protect crops against weeds, drought, veld fires and animals. 1.animals: •Plants need to be protected from animals like sheep, goats, donkeys and cattle. •These animals are grazers and browsers, so they destroy plants. •Therefore plants can be protected from the animals by using fences. •Barbed wire, or thorn bush wood can be used as fence. 2. Veld fires •Veld fire are usually experienced during the dry season. •These fires may destroy plants in fields and plantations. •Plants can be protected from veld fires by a fireguard. •A fireguard is a strip of land without grass on it. •A fire guard must be at least 9 metres wide. •The strip runs around the area planted to prevent the veld fires. 3. Drought •Drought is the shortage of rain water for a long time. •When plants do not enough water they wilt, resulting in poor growth and even death of plants. •Low rainfall also causes low yields and poor growth. •Drought can be protected by: ✓Plant drought resistant seeds. ✓Using irrigation ✓Practice water conservation methods such as mulching and terraces. 4.
