Spring festival or Chun Jie is the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. When Chun Jie is approaching, people are busy purchasing goods, cleaning the house, cooking traditional food, making Spring Festival couplets, and hanging spring festival pictures. Having a family dinner is the main activity on Chun Jie. Dumplings are essential to the dinner. Dumplings represent reunion and goodwill. The whole family gathers to enjoy quality family time. On Chun Jie,Lunar New Year's Day, people in new clothes visit each other and give money to kids to send good wishes. Bacterial Cell One of the very first organisms to evolve on earth was probably a unicellular organism, like modern bacteria. Ever since then, life has evolved into a multitude of life forms over many millennia. However, we can still trace our ancestry back to this single-celled organism. Bacteria Definition “Bacteria are unicellular organisms belonging to the prokaryotic group where the organisms lack a few organelles and a true nucleus”. Internal Structures • Cytoplasm: A gel-like substance that fills the cell, containing water, enzymes, nutrients, and waste, where metabolic activities occur. • Nucleoid: A region within the cytoplasm that houses the bacterial chromosome, a single, continuous circle of DNA. • Ribosomes: Responsible for synthesizing proteins within the cell. • Plasmids: Small, circular, extra-chromosomal DNA molecules that can provide advantageous traits, such as antibiotic resistance. • Mesosomes: (Optional, less prominent in some views) Folds in the plasma membrane that are believed to be involved in cell division and respiration. Outer Structures & Layers • Cell Wall: A rigid outer layer composed of peptidoglycan that provides structural support, maintains cell shape, and protects against osmotic lysis. Capsule: (Optional) A sticky outer layer of polysaccharide that can help the bacteria adhere to surfaces, protect against phagocytosis by the immune system, and serve as a food reserve. • Plasma Membrane: A selectively permeable barrier that regulates the passage of nutrients and waste products into and out of the cell. Appendages • Flagella: Long, whip-like structures that provide motility, allowing the bacterium to move through its environment. • Pili (and Fimbriae): Hair-like protein appendages. Pili are longer and involved in bacterial conjugation (transfer of genetic material), while the shorter, more numerous fimbriae primarily function in attachment to host cells or surfaces.
Digestive System. Teeth help break down the food to small pieces. Tongue moves food to the back of the mouth and to the opening of the esophagus. Saliva is 99% water and enzymes that begin to chemical digestion. Small Intestine is a coiled tube like organ is 20feet long. This is when nutrients are taken up by the body. Villus is the spot that nutrients are pass out of the small intestine to the body. Liver is a large organ that produces bile to digest fat. Gallbladder produces bile as needed into the small intestine. Pancreas is an organ that produces enzymes and release directly into the small intestine. Colon or large intestine is an organ that absorbs most of the liquid from undigested food. Rectum is where solid waste is stored. Anus is the opening to the out side . The main function of the digestive system is to turn the food into simple sugars, amino acids, and carbohydrates. This is fuel for the human body. The first stage of the digestive system is the mouth and teeth. The teeth grid up the food. Which saliva is mix with the food to break the food down. The food is swallowed and wave like motion moves the food to the stomach. The second stage is the stomach breaks down the food. The stomach churns the food. Mixing the food with the gastric juices. This is done with the gastric juices are mix in the stomach. The glands in the stomach produce the juices. The gastric juices break down the proteins. Then the food is passed into the small intestine. In the small intestine which is about 20ft long. This is where the small intestine absorbs the nutrients from the food. Most digestion takes place in the duodenum of the small intestine. Small finger like projections called villus that collect the nutrients. These nutrients are passed into the bloodstream. The three organs that help in digesting the food. Liver, and gallbladder. Liver produces bile , a substance that aids in digestion of fats. Gallbladder holds and releases bile into the small intestine as needed. Pancreas lies across the back of the abdomen. The pancreas produces enzymes that are necessary to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Cells in the pancreas are called Islet of Langerhans, which produce two hormones (glucagon, and insulin. These regulate sugar in the blood. Insulin is a hormone that stimulates the liver to convert glucose to glycogen. Glucagon is a hormone that stimulates the liver to convert glycogen to glucose.
The History of Chocolate Many people believe that chocolate originally came from Europe. However, chocolate, called the “food of the gods,” was first made in the Americas. The first chocolate was very different from contemporary chocolate. Wild chocolate trees can grow easily in the humid Amazon rainforest. Clusters of flowers growing on these trees turn to seeds. About 20 to 60 cacao beans can be found in the seeds. Cacao beans are the ingredient needed to create sweet, soothing, and delicious chocolate treats. The Mayan and Aztec cultures both thought that chocolate trees were brought from paradise by gods. The Mayans and Aztecs used the beans from this divine tree to create a special beverage with a very pleasant odor. Surprisingly, the Aztecs believed that it would be toxic to women and children. In the 1500s, the Spanish explorer Cortes met the Aztecs. Cortes became quite interested in the plantations where the Aztecs cultivated chocolate trees. When he returned to Europe, he took cacao beans with him. He introduced the people of Spain to the Aztecs’ chocolate beverage. Over the next 100 years or so, kings, queens, and members of the upper class enjoyed drinking chocolate. They enjoyed it even more once they learned to add sugar to the beverage! Soon, chocolate had spread all across Europe. New machines allowed chocolate makers to perfect their products and produce them at a very rapid rate. Preparing the beans in special ways brought out the aroma of chocolate. The beans were combined with condensed milk to give the chocolate a smooth texture. Today, contemporary chocolates with subtle flavors fill the shelves of expensive chocolate shops. The different types of chocolate available today vary widely. True chocolate lovers can tell which is best, though. They will tell you that the flavor of high quality chocolate stays on the palate long after you finish it
Singapore, a city-state that imports most of its food from other countries, started experimenting with vertical farming to scale up local food production as early as 2009. Having limited land but a large population, Singapore has expanded upward by building high-rise “farm walls,” which allow plants to grow up, rather than across the land. With a population of 23 million, Taiwan should follow Singapore’s example and develop vertical farming because this farming method can address issues such as limited land, water, and agricultural workers. 2 First, the rainwater-driven rotary system in vertical farms makes better use of land and, therefore, may help deal with the farmland issue in Taiwan. Taiwan has lost a lot of agricultural land to industrial and domestic use. This land issue can be addressed by the rotary system, which allows farmers to move racks of plants—one by one—as high as nine meters up in the air to get enough sunlight. Each vertical farm in Singapore has more than 20 racks of rotating plant-growing containers, providing an efficient way to make the most of limited land space. 3 Second, aside from the efficient use of land, the rotary system helps save water, which can prevent a lack of water during water rationing. Despite the fact that Taiwan has a lot more annual rainfall than the world average, much of it quickly flows down steep mountains into the sea, which makes collecting rainwater difficult. In vertical farms, plants are watered by recycled rainwater precisely where they need to be when the racks are rotated down to the micro-sprinklers. Singapore’s urban farming has proved that this sustainable irrigation method allows plants to be grown with only 5% of the water used in traditional agriculture. 4 Third, the operation of vertical farms relies greatly on machines and thus may ease the problem of having a declining number of agricultural workers. Low pay, long hours, and tough working conditions on traditional farms mean most young people would rather choose other careers, which results in an age gap in agriculture with many more older workers than younger ones. Such a negative impact could be reduced by the highly-computerized work on vertical farms. Mostly operated by machines, the work on vertical farms is lighter. As a result, fewer workers are needed on vertical farms. 5 Given these points, vertical farming appears to be the perfect solution for Taiwan, and we are technologically prepared for this new farming method. One biotechnology company in Taiwan has been working with a Danish partner since 2020, and they have successfully run a vertical farm in Copenhagen. If we can build more vertical farms in Taiwan, many agricultural issues can be dealt with, and city citizens may be able to start growing and harvesting food sustainably at the touch of a button.
