Girl Wrestling
Sophie hardly had the energy to gather her backpack and athletic bag when her mom arrived to pick her up after practice. She had no idea wrestling would involve such exhausting training and conditioning. She also had only a dim notion that a girl joining the wrestling team might get a negative reaction. She had thought it might come from her parents, the guys on the team, even the coach, maybe, but not her best friend. That was a shock.
“You just want to hang around David,” Michelle had accused. “You think he’ll acknowledge you and ask you out.”
“Not true!” Sophie hollered back. “I want to challenge myself.”
It was the biggest challenge of her life, but by the day of the first match, she was ready, plus she felt even reasonably confident in several moves she had learned. When she actually wrestled, it was the most difficult undertaking of her life. She lost by six points, so she did not understand the feeling of pride and accomplishment that filled her. However, when she gazed into the faces of her family and friends—Michelle included—she saw it reflected there.
