The exhibition
It’s always nice when artwork from local residents is on display in a city, and our community center has just had an unusual exhibition. For decades the buildings of the old cement factory in my neighborhood have been empty. The outside walls were being made even more unattractive by unimaginative and sometimes offensive slogans, sprayed on by vandals—I do not like to call them graffiti artists because there is nothing artistic about this.
One day, someone bright and innovative from the offices of the local authority had a vision while looking out of her window at the unappealing display in front of her. She saw instead a vibrant array of colorful pictures depicting scenes from our everyday lives, and a plan was born. She wrote a proposal to her supervisor, who liked the idea, and decided to bring it up at the next department meeting.
The plan was simple. The center would invite young local artists to paint the walls, inside and out, of the old brickbuildings. They would supply all the materials and the artists would do the work. They could paint anything they liked as long as it was not obscene, distressing, or offensive, and they were encouraged to think about social issues that were affecting the area. Each artist had to submit an application outlining, either in words or with a simple sketch, what they intended to draw or paint and what materials they required. The response was overwhelming. None of the applicants were rejected although a few were asked to modify their original plans, and work began two months ago.
The exhibition opened yesterday and I have to say, it is fabulous. It is suitable for the whole family and brings to public attention some of the issues of our time, like poverty, pollution, climate change, war, religion, and of equal importance, dreams. Although all of the subjects are serious, the artwork is so well done and exciting that even children will be able to enjoy it. There is no admission fee, although donations are requested for more materials, so grab the family and get down to the old factory today.
