JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) â Indonesiaâs highest volcano on its most densely populated island released searing gas clouds and rivers of lava Sunday in its latest eruption. Monsoon rains eroded and finally collapsed the lava dome atop 3,676-meter (12,060-foot) Mount Semeru, causing the eruption, according to National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari. Several villages were blanketed with falling ash, blocking out the sun, but no casualties have been reported. Several hundred residents, their faces smeared with volcanic dust and rain, fled to temporary shelters or left for other safe areas. Thick columns of ash were blasted more than 1,500 meters (nearly 5,000 feet) into the sky while searing gas and lava flowed down Semeruâs slopes toward a nearby river. Increased activities of the volcano on Sunday afternoon prompted authorities to widen the danger zone to 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the crater, said Hendra Gunawan, who heads the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center. He said scientists raised the volcanoâs alert level to the highest and people were advised to keep off the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is in the path of the lava flow. Semeruâs last major eruption was in December last year, when it blew up with fury that left 51 people dead in villages that were buried in layers of mud. Several hundred others suffered serious burns and the eruption forced the evacuation of more than 10,000 people. The government moved about 2,970 houses out of the danger zone. Semeru, also known as Mahameru, has erupted numerous times in the past 200 years. The electricity ran down the wet string to the metal key. When he reached for the key, he got a surprise. The electricity jumped from the key and gave him a shock! Do not try this yourself. It's not safe to do. When Ben Franklin tried to do it again, he was hurt badly. Many Uses for Kites. Some people have used kites for fishing. They put a fishhook and bait on the long kite tail. Earthquake Hazards There are so many things that can happen during or after an earthquake. There are surface rupture and physical damage to buildings and other infrastructures, liquefaction, fire, landslide, and tsunami. Surface rupture and physical damage is the most obvious hazard of an earthquake the ground to break and buildings to collapse. Urban areas would experience more Earthquakes with higher energy create stronger ground motion, which can cause of this damage due to the presence of more infrastructures. Liquefaction occurs in areas where the soil becomes saturated with water. During an earthquake, the movement of the ground may loosen the soil and allow more water to seep in between the particles. This decreases the ability of the soil to support structures that are resting upon it. When it can no longer support a building, instead of being toppled over, the building starts to sink. Liquefaction mostly occur in reclaimed lands, which were once a part of a body of water. Fires can break out during or after an earthquake due to damaged or broken utility lines, substations, and power plants. It can also occur when ground rupture breaks gas tanks or pipes that lead to gas leaks. Tsunami or a harbor wave is an earthquake hazard that is generated when earthquakes occur on the seafloor. Tsunami displaces large volume of water from the sea to the land, causing damages in the cities and communities near the shore (figure 4-2).
