Growing up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a small city surrounded by endless plains, I've found unexpected echoes of home in China's smaller towns — from the warmth of locals in Huaihua, Central China's Hunan province, to the quiet charm of Yangshuo, South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. With an itch to see more of China's lesser-visited regions, I began planning a trip to the northwest with seven friends — five Americans, one Pakistani, one Zimbabwean, and one Colombian. We bought round-trip tickets from Shanghai to Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, for less than $120 each. From there, we planned to rent a car and drive to Xining in Qinghai, then on to Qinghai Lake, and finally to Lanzhou, Gansu. To make that possible, several of us applied for Chinese driver's licenses, a process that involved translating our US licenses into Mandarin and passing a short test on traffic laws. Within a day, we were licensed. As we piled into two rental cars in late March to begin our eight-day journey, it became clear that this wasn't just a road trip — it was the culmination of our four years in China, the Mandarin we had so diligently studied, and our ongoing effort to contribute to US-China people-to-people relations. Right away, we drew curious reactions. At the Yinchuan airport, taxi drivers offered us rides into the city, only to stare in astonishment when we told them we had rented cars. "You're driving? In China?" one driver asked, visibly surprised. It was a reaction we'd encountered multiple times during our trip, as foreign drivers are rare in China, especially in remote regions. In Yinchuan, we stocked up on snacks and adjusted to the chilly desert air. From there, we headed west, navigating wide highways framed by dramatic landscapes: arid plains, jagged mountains, and occasionally, a herd of sheep crossing the road. The vastness of the Northwest was humbling — and as someone who grew up on the wide-open prairies of South Dakota, it felt oddly familiar. One of the highlights of our trip was camping by Qinghai Lake, the largest saltwater lake in China. A few summers ago, Santiago Solano, one of my classmates from the US, cycled from Xi'an in Shaanxi to Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region over the course of a month and met many kind strangers along the way. One of them was Geng San, a Tibetan lamb herder who managed a piece of land right next to Qinghai Lake and graciously invited us to camp there. "That's what China is — it's the people. The quiet generosity of an old Tibetan nomad who, years after we first met, still offered us a place to rest on his land," said Solano, who is also part of the group on this trip. But apparently, we underestimated just how cold it would be to camp next to Qinghai Lake in late March. It was deathly freezing. In preparation for the trip, we had ordered two tent kits and eight sleeping bags. However, when the temperature eventually dropped to — 10 C, all of us piled into the cars and turned the heaters on. So much for camping. From Qinghai Lake, we drove to Lanzhou, where we visited many food markets and tried every type of noodle on offer. Since we are college students, we rented a gaming hotel room — something I've only ever seen in China. At night, instead of attending local parties as we had before, we stayed in the hotel and gamed late into the morning. For me, the trip was as much about the journey as it was about the destinations. Driving through Northwest China gave us a unique perspective on the region's natural beauty and its people. At gas stations, shopkeepers greeted us with curiosity and kindness, often offering recommendations for nearby attractions. At roadside carts, we sampled local specialties, grabbing a quick skewer and a mango for the road. And at every stop, we were touched by the warmth and hospitality that make traveling in China so rewarding. As an American who has lived in China for several years, I'm often asked about my experiences here. Trips like this one remind me of the similarities between the two countries, despite their differences. Just as road trips are a quintessential part of American culture, they've become my favorite way to explore China. Whether it's driving through the rolling hills of South Dakota or the deserts of Ningxia, there's something universal about the freedom and camaraderie that come with having complete control over where you end up. Peas  Peas are one of the most important vegetables Zimbabweans can grow for export.  They are legumes  Legumes fix Nitrogen  IMPORTANCE OF PEAS  Peas have a lot of health benefits for human consumption.  They can be eaten raw or added to a variety of dishes  Peas have vitamins and antioxidants.  They are good for heart performance.  They are good for dealing with high blood pressure.  They have a very high protein content VARIETIES  Some of the common varieties to grow are Snowbird, Sabre, Serge, Alaska, Greenfeast and Recruit  Varieties are also called cultivars FAVOURABLE CLIMATE  Peas prefer cold conditions to grow well.  Temperatures of 22 degrees or below (starting at 13 degrees Celsius) are the best for peas farming.  The best temperature is 22 degrees Celsius.  Extremely hot temperatures will lead to lack of growth or hard pods. SOIL REQUIREMENTS  Soil should be fertile.  The soil should have good drainage.  Soil pH must be in the range of 6 to 7.5.  The best soil type is sandy loam – clay soils can also cut it  The soil should be deep LAND PREPARATION  Land preparation includes the following  Dig or plough to aerate the soil and improve drainage  Harrow to break the clods (big lumps)  Make ridges to keep water within the bed  level the bed to ensure equal water distribution SOWING AND PLANTING  Seeds must be sown about 2 to 3 centimeters into the ground  The germination process takes place within at most 1 week.  When sowing seeds, the in-row spacing should be 5 – 10 centimeters whereas the inter-row spacing should be 25 centimeters. Management Practices  Watering is necessary but does not overdo it – water depending on the state of the pea plants.  Generally, peas do not require lots of water.  WEEDING - Weeding should be done occasionally as informed by the state of the field.  MULCHING – to conserve soil moisture  PEST CONTROL – to protect crops from damage  DISEASE CONTROL – to protect crops from damage  TRELLISING – to support indeterminate varieties PEST, DISEASE AND WEED CONTROL  Aphids, beetles, leaf weevils, nematodes, and leaf miners are some of the common pests to look out for.  Powdery and Downey mildew, fusarium wilt are some of the common diseases to look out for.  As much as you can use chemical methods to deal with pests, diseases and weeds you can still use biological and cultural control methods.  Most of the pests and diseases that affect peas can be dealt with by usingcultural methods like weed control.  getting rid of affected plants and plant debris can control pest and diseases control.

Planting •Carrots are planted in beds where they will mature. •Water the bed a day before planting. •Mark the rows 30cm apart. •Carrots seeds are very small, therefore due to their size sow the seeds thinly along the rows. •Rub the seeds between your fingers as you sow. •Cover the seeds with fine sand. •The bed can be covered with grass so that the soil remain moist. •Water the bed soon after sowing using a watering can fitted with a fine rose. Caring for carrots (a) Thinning: is when you remove some of the baby plants in a row to free up space for the rest so that they can grow to full size. • Thinning in carrots is usually done two weeks after germination. • Thin out to leave a spacing of 4 -6 cm from each plant. (b) Watering: If carrots are not watered enough they will not grow fast. • Therefore carrots need a steady supply of water to keep the soil moist during the growing period. (c) Weeding: weeds are removed by hand, especially those in the rows. (d) Top dressing: carrots are usually not top dressed. •Fertilizer can only be applied after one has noticed leaves turning yellow. (e) Pest and disease control: aphids and nematodes attack carrots. •Dimethoate is used to control aphids. Harvesting carrots •Carrots are harvested 2 to 3 months after planting. •Bigger ones are harvested first inorder to leave more room for the young seedlings to develop. •Water the bed first the lift the carrots by hand. •A garden fork can also be used to loosen the soil, then pull up by hand. •The carrots can then be tied into bunches of 5 – 7 carrots

Management of flowers 1. weeding: ensure that the flower beds are weed free. •Weeds are removed by hand pulling with the help of a hand fork. 2. watering: watering should be done regularly during the dry season and less frequently during the rainy season. •make sure the beds are moist but avoid waterlogging. 3. fertilizing: soil should be well fertilized with super phosphate at planting. •Flowers should not be top dressed with ammonium nitrate as this will affect flower production. 4. pruning: use a pair of secateurs or very sharp knife to remove weak shoots and dead or diseased parts of the plant. •Pruning also encourages new growth and controls the height of the flowers. Harvesting •Cut the flowers in early bloom. •Allow 30cm stems, grade and remove lower leaves. •Tie in bundles •label accordingly, cure by setting 20cm of the stem in boiling water for 20 minutes. (this will make the flowers last longer) •Store the flowers in cool conditions Marketing • Flowers need fast transport to the market. • Flowers can be sold in bundles, boxes or in pots. • Flowers are sold in bouquets at a local market or are packed in boxes for export market. • They are bought for different occasions such as weddings, funerals and parties.
