In the days of the Wright brothers, scientists expected that a man would flyânot the Wright brothers, but a prominent scientist, Samuel Pierpoint Langley. Langley had a whole team of other scientists working with him. Working in the Washington, DC, area, he built a series of experimental flying machines. Wilbur and Orville Wright, in contrast, had no formal scientific training. To earn a living, they ran a bicycle shop in their home town. Intrigued by the possibility of flight, they studied aerodynamics, built their flying machine, and flew it successfully.
