  • Q10

Why did Texas want independence from Mexico, then petition to join the United States nine years later?

Mexico was not protecting Texans or their basic rights.  Texas wanted its own government to provide the things Mexico was not.  Texas then wanted the protection of the United States government and felt that the United States would respect Texans' rights and principles.

Mexico was taxing the Texans too much.  Later, Texas determined that they would have to pay taxes to someone, so they joined the United States.  They were worried that the United States would disrespect its citizens but they were willing to take their chances.
