St. Augustine
Florida is well known for its beautiful scenery and warm weather, but it also has some of the most interesting historical landmarks in America. Did you know that the first European settlement in
America was built in Florida? The settlement of St. Augustine, founded in 1565 by the Spanish, was already 55 years old when the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth! In its early history, St. Augustine was attacked many times by English pirates such as Sir Francis Drake. By 1683, the settlers built a fort named Castillo de San Marcos to protect themselves from invaders.
Today, St. Augustine is a popular tourist attraction and is considered the oldest city in America. Visitors can tour the original fort and learn how the settlers lived and protected themselves from
their enemies. Other tourist attractions include the oldest wooden school house and the oldest jail.
