My files are a mess. Can you help?â âSure! What are files and folders?â asked Max. âA file is information, like a picture or document. Files have names, like âHomework.docx.â The part after the dot, like .docx, is the file extension. It tells you the file type,â Compy explained. Max pointed to âGame.exe.â âSo, this is a program file?â âYes!â said Compy. âTo organize, we use foldersâlike drawers for files. You can even put folders inside folders!â Max created a âSchoolâ folder, added his homework files, and made a âProjectsâ folder inside it. âNow everythingâs neat!â Chapter 3: The File Explorer Adventure Compyâs screen flickered. âSome files are missing. Letâs use Windows Explorer to find them. Itâs like a map for files and folders.â Max opened Windows Explorer and saw a tree-like list of folders. âThis is like a tree with branches!â âExactly!â said Compy. âSearch for the missing files and move them to the right folders.â Max found the files in âDownloadsâ and moved them. âI feel like a computer detective!â Chapter 4: The Final Challenge Compyâs screen turned into a game board. âTime for a quiz! Whatâs the purpose of an operating system? How do you change the desktop background? Whatâs the difference between a file and a folder?â Max answered all the questions correctly, and fireworks lit up the screen. âCongratulations, Max! Memory Adventure: From Learning to Forgetting Imagine Alex is preparing for a school science fair. Storing Memories (2.5) Alex studies a science experiment. The semantic memory (facts and knowledge, like âwater boils at 100°Câ) is stored in the brain, while episodic memory (personal experiences, like âI mixed vinegar and baking soda yesterdayâ) records the event. The hippocampus (the brainâs âsave buttonâ) helps transfer these memories into long-term memory. During sleep, memory consolidation (making memories stable and long-lasting) happens, and Alex vividly remembers the fun surprise when the mixture fizzesâa flashbulb memory (emotionally strong, vivid memory). Alex also learns the skill of carefully pouring liquids, a procedural memory stored in the basal ganglia, and how to react when the mixture splashes, a conditioned response stored in the cerebellum. Emotions make the memory even stronger, thanks to the amygdala. Retrieving Memories (2.6) The next day, Alex goes to the science fair. Seeing the experiment table triggers priming (unconscious memory activationâseeing the table makes Alex remember steps). Being in the same classroom helps context-dependent memory (better recall in the same place as learning). Alex is also in the same excited mood as while practicing, so mood-congruent memory helps remember details of the experiment. New Planet, New School I had a lot of friends back in my old school, on my old planet. When the school year ended, though, my family moved across the galaxy to Planet Zox. Planet Zox has species from so many different planets, just walking down the street can be an adventure. So can going to the grocery store. Actually, I sort of liked my new planet until it was time to start school. "I won't fit in," I complained to my parents that first morning. "Nobody there will be like me." "They don't have to be like you in order to like you," Mom said. It took me a minute to sort out that sentence. Once I got to school, I kept my eye out for other humans. I spotted a few in the halls, but the only one in my class is Swiss Pumpernickel. When I walked in that first day, some of the students started to tease him. "Way to go, Pumpernickel. Looks like you finally got yourself a girlfriend," they said. Swiss Pumpernickel turned red, then glared at me-as if it were my fault for being human! After that, nobody talked to me all morning. I looked for some humans to sit with at lunch, but they were all sitting with other species_. I only found one table with any empty chairs. There, alone, sat one of my classmates, Hululialana. She was so wrapped up in her tentacles, I couldn't find her face. I approached with caution and spoke with great care. "Hello, Hululialana," I said. Slowly, several arms lifted. Then one arm unwound itself, floated toward me through the air, and pulled out the closest chair. I took a seat. "Thank you," I said. We looked at each other, then away. She began to wrap herself up again. "How's your first day going?" I quickly asked. Hululialana shrugged-I think. "I wish I were still at my old school," she said. "Me, too," I said. She looked shocked, and I laughed. "I mean, I wish I were still at my old school," I explained. "At least you're not the only human," Hululialana said. "I'm the only Hulu." I thought for a moment. "That makes you special," I said. "That makes me a freak," she said. "Well, let's be freaks together," I suggested. Then, for the first time, Hululialana smiled. From that day forward, school on Planet Zox has been pretty fun.
Starry Night Josie and Ling were good friends. Ling was happy Josie was her neighbor. Josie was happy Ling lived nearby, too. Josie and Ling couldn't wait for the school day to end. They planned a sleepover at Josie's house. They were going to sleep in a tent in Josie's backyard. As the class was leaving, Mr. Cortes said, "Your weekend homework is to look at the nighttime sky and explain what you saw on Monday." The class grumbled. "Why the unhappy sounds?" Mr. Cortes asked. "It will be fun looking at the sky at night." The girls arrived at Josie's house and were delighted to be sleeping outdoors. Josie said, "I'm so happy that we get to sleep in the tent. It will be lots of fun." Then Ling said, "I'll get the sleeping bags and flashlights. I brought flashlights so we can play games in the tent." Josie's dad poked his head inside the tent. "Girls, it is a good time to do your homework now because it is getting dark," he said. "Awww," they both complained. "Dad," said Josie, "Do we have to, now?" "Yes, I already set up the telescope." Ling said, "I hope this won't take too long." Josie looked up and spotted a crescent moon. "Did you know the moon's light comes from the sun?" said Josie. "It's funny that it's called moonlight." "Yes," said Ling, who was still thinking about playing in the tent. Josie's dad smiled at the girls and said, "See the stars in the sky? Those points of bright light can form shapes." "You can see the Big Dipper," he said. "It's a group of stars that look like a giant spoon in the sky." Josie's dad showed her how to look through the telescope. "Wow, that's more stars than I ever dreamed of. I never imagined there could be so many." It was Ling's turn to look. Ling cried out, "I see a bright light moving in the sky!" "That's a shooting star!" said Josie's dad. "This is fun," said Ling. "I really enjoy looking at the stars." "I think we've seen enough of the nighttime sky," said Josie's dad. "You girls can go play now." "Aw, Dad, can't we keep looking?" asked Josie. "This is really fun." "Yes," said Ling. "We have had an adventure already, and we haven't even played in the tent yet!" "You're right, Ling," said Josie. "This has been one exciting night."
