Slaves were sold at slave markets, were used to make plantations owners in the South very wealthy, and had no rights at all.
Although slaves were not allowed to meet in groups, a number of people rebelled against the way they were treated.
West Africa had a well-developed and highly organized society, trade flourished and many areas in the region became thriving trade centers. Slavery already existed in West Africa during this time, however the society followed strict rules on how to treat their slaves.
Life as a slave was hard, and slaves developed songs and stories that helped them through difficult times.
