My favourite place
By Fiona Baker
What’s your favourite place in the whole world? Whenever people are asked that question, they often start describing somewhere exotic that they’ve visited on holiday, or maybe somewhere they’re living now. And if you give them the same question to answer
the following week, they might very well give you a different answer altogether! But I know exactly what my answer would be, and it would always be the same: my grandparents’ garden.
It’s not a particularly big garden, or full of amazing plants. But when the flowers do come out in spring, there’s a fabulous splash of colour, especially from some huge red ones called peonies, and the place is alive with all kinds of insects and birds. My dad and I often sit there together then, not needing to talk, but just appreciating the peace. Even my pet dog, Wolfie, manages to sit quietly with us in the sunshine – after he’s finished running around everywhere and barking to announce our arrival, that is!
But another reason why the garden is special is because it reminds me of when my older brother
and I were children. At the bottom of the garden, for example, part of the garden is hidden by the thick branches of the fruit trees, which drop all their fruit there. We loved the idea that it was a secret space that no-one else knew about. We made up all sorts
of fantastic games there, too. Then grandma would come and find us, to take us inside for afternoon tea, with delicious cakes she’d made herself – and we’d eat absolutely everything!
Since then, my mum has often tried to recreate the same tea for us, with exactly the same type of cakes as grandma’s, which she’s made herself. And they’re really good, but they’re never the same as grandma’s used
to be when we were small – and I’ve no idea why. Of course, grandma is a fantastic cook – but then so is my mum. But maybe we still need the magical atmosphere of the garden all those years ago to give the food its great taste.
