- Q1
What is the difference between the excretory system and the urinary system?
Excretory system encompasses all organs that release waste (including lungs, skin, liver, and urinary sys), where urinary includes kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra only.
30s - Q2
What is the main function of the kidneys? What are the additional three functions?
Filter out toxins/wastes AND reabsorb useful nutrients; gluconeogenesis (process of forming new glucose molecules), produces renin and erythropoietin, and activating vitamin D.
30s - Q3
What is a nephron?
Functional unit of kidney that filters blood.
30s - Q4
What are the collecting ducts?
Receive filtrate from nephrons and then transports filtrate through medullary pyramids.
30s - Q5
What is the calyx?
Delivers urine to ureters → bladder → urethra
30s - Q6
What three tissues support the kidneys?
The three tissues are fibrous capsule, perirenal fat capsule, and renal fascia.
30s - Q7
Describe the pathology of renal ptosis.
A significant decrease of the perirenal fat capsule causes the kidneys drop to inferior position → ureter may twist → urine can’t be transported → urine backs up in kidneys (renal failure).
30s - Q8
What does the adrenal gland do?
Part of endocrine system that secretes adrenaline.
