The advantage of direct method is that the teacher can control the class and fit in a lot of activity into a short class period. This leaves plenty of opportunities for the students to hone their skills, especially new ones. On the other hand, because the class is centered around the teacher, some students may not receive proper feedback, and creativity is limited. Also, the lesser talented athletes often tend to get lost in the shuffle while the great athletes shine. However, there are now a multitude of various teaching strategies that can be employed in addition to that method. Ex: Announcements, Module/Unit introductions, Descriptions/modeling of assignments and learning activities, Written or video lectures, Demonstration videos, Presentations, Discussions moderated by instructors, Interactive tutorials. Indirect Method The Indirect Teaching Style allows students to be involved in their own learning through experience and other peer’s knowledge. The Indirect approach is the opposite of what the direct style suggests, but they are both strictly related, meaning you can’t have one without the other. Yet, in other ways the processes of Indianization and Sinicization were remarkably similar. Southeast Asia already was socially and culturally diverse, making accommodation easy. Furthermore, indigenous peoples shaped the adaption and adoption of outside influences and, indeed, seem to have sought out concepts and practices that enhanced rather than redirected changes already underway in their own societies. They also rejected some components: for example, some of the vocabulary and general theories related to the Indian notions of social hierarchy were borrowed but much of the specific practices were not, and neither Indian nor Chinese views of women as socially and legally inferior were accepted. Ostinato Music Definition Ostinato (plural – ostinati or ostinatos) is an Italian word meaning obstinate or persistent and is used in music to describe a musical phrase or rhythm that is repeated persistently. The repeated pattern could be a melody, a figure in the bass – called a basso ostinato or simply a repeated rhythmic idea. An ostinato may be played for an entire piece of music or just during one section. The key aspect to remember in the definition of an ostinato is that it is a pattern that is repeated persistently in a piece of music. Rhythmic Ostinato A rhythmic ostinato is a rhythmic pattern that is persistently repeated. It will often be played on an untuned percussion instrument (e.g. snare drum, triangle, etc..). However, rhythmic ostinati can also be found in parts played on pitched instruments where the note pitch stays the same or where the pitches change as the phrase is repeated. The key characteristic is that it is the rhythm that is persistently repeated.In Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero” the use of a rhythmic ostinato brings a magical and almost hypnotic feel to the piece as the percussive pattern contrasts with the sweeping and almost improvisatory nature of the flute melody. Ostinati Examples in Contemporary Music Rhythmic and melodic ostinatos have had a massive influence on contemporary popular music across a wide range of genres. This can be seen in 2 main ways: Riffs (short melodic phrases) – these are effectively contemporary expressions of ostinato. Loops – rhythmic and melodic phrases are repeated to create the characteristic sound of contemporary productions. As a result, you will probably be able to find examples of the use of repeated patterns/ostinati in most contemporary songs. However, there are some songs where the use of an ostinato provides the clear foundation for the song and these are useful examples to listen to. Nowadays, millions of us are turning to chatbots for emotional support. But can AI ever be capable of empathy? What about the consequences of people seeking emotional support from machines that can only pretend to care? Can the rise of so-called empathetic AI change the way we understand empathy and interact with one another? The researchers found that the empathiser must first be able to perceive how the other person is feeling. They must also be affected by those emotions, feel them to some degree themselves, and differentiate between themselves and the other person. On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions. Most chatbots are powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued cues and feedback helping to strengthen the empathiser’s response. It also requires some degree of intuitive awareness of an individual and their situation. Consider someone who cries while telling a doctor she is pregnant. If we know her history of trying for years to be pregnant, we can imagine that her tears mean something different than, say, if she didn’t want to have kids. Current AIs are incapable of understanding that kind of slight difference in emotion . The big question is whether AI can truly feel human emotions. Some think AIs might one day share our feelings. One approach is to continue enlarging LLMs with ever vaster and more diverse data and integrate multimodal data like facial expressions and voice. By doing this, AI may develop emotional capabilities. Currently, simple versions of these emotion-reading robots already exist. Yet, some scholars argue that you can’t really know what sadness is unless you have felt sad. “You need to have emotions to experience empathy,” says psychologist Michael Inzlicht at the University of Toronto in Canada. Genuine empathy emerges from social interactions and recognizing other minds - a complete phenomenon requiring consciousness , something AI lacks now and likely always will.
