Inference in reading 2

In the 1800's, the city of Chicago grew quickly. People built homes and roads as rapidly as possible. Building a home out of bricks took longer than building with wood, so people built homes with wood to save time. They also built wood plank roads. In 1871, a fire started in the city. There had been little rain, so everything that was made of wood was very dry. The people of Chicago learned a valuable lesson about building with wood.

Mom and Jenna finished stirring the cookies, then placed neat little rows of cookie dough on the trays. While the cookies were in the oven baking, Jenna started cleaning up and doing dishes. Soon, the whole house smelled like fresh baked cookies. Mom and Jenna continued chatting, talking about their plans for this weekend. Suddenly, Jenna asked "What's that smell?" Just then, the smoke detector started screaming as smoke poured from the oven.

Maggie was riding in the car with her mother, headed toward their grandmother's home despite the awful weather. As the sun began to poke through the dark clouds, Maggie saw a beautiful rainbow begin to form. It seemed to stretch for miles. It was as if they were trying to chase it, but couldn't quite catch up with amazing band of colors. This was certainly more beautiful to watch than what they were driving in a half hour earlier.

Lake effect snow is caused by a cold air mass moving across a large body of water before the mass moves over land. As the air mass moves across a lake, it picks up some of the water. Once the air mass reaches land, the water is released as either rain or snow, depending upon the temperature. Cities that lie along the edge of a lake look forward to the surface of the lake freezing. A frozen lake means less snow for the city.

The planets in our solar system have different lengths of years, depending on how far they are from the sun. An Earth year is 365 days, which is how long it takes our planet to revolve around the sun once. The planets that are closes to the sun are able to complete their year more quickly. The planets further away from the sun have longer years. Mercury has the shortest year, with only 88 days. Neptune has the longest year, with over 60,000 days!

As soon as Eddie walked through the front door, he knew it was going to be a long night. He could not find Harry anywhere. The garbage can was knocked over, with trash scattered everywhere. The food dish was empty, and water was spilled all over the floor. Even the couch cushions has holes chewed in them. Eddie finally found Harry. Harry was fast asleep, snoring. He wouldn't move his body or lift his tail. Harry's busy day must have tired him out.

Jacob and his father were watching the football game intently. It was a tie, with less than 2 minutes to go. They watched their team prepare to kick the ball. If the team made the goal, they would win the game. They watched anxiously as the kicker sent the ball flying into the air. Suddenly, Jacob stood up and started yelling, "Yes, yes!" while he gave his father a high-five. Jacob and his father agreed that it was a good game.

When President John F. Kennedy took office, he shocked the people of the United States when he declared that a man would soon walk on the moon. Many people were intrigued, yet many others did not believe him. On July 20, 1969, the country watched in amazement as Kennedy's promise came true. Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins proudly planted an American flag where no man had ever walked before.

Every country has a favorite sport. In the United States, football is very popular. Americans enjoy watching their favorite athletes run at top speed, carrying the little brown and white football firmly in their hands. In contrast, the people of Spain prefer to watch their favorite athletes kick a black and white ball down the field. These athletes try to score a goal by kicking the ball past their opponents, into a net guarded closely by a goalie.

The tent and bags were in the car, the cooler was packed with snacks and drinks, and the Meyer family was almost ready to leave. They were excited about the adventures ahead. It would take two days to drive up into the mountains, where they would reach their favorite summertime spot. They planned to spend their days building fires, hiking, canoeing, and swimming in the lake. This was the time of year the family enjoyed most.
