What do the green glasses lying on top of the bible symbolize in "The Devil and Tom Walker?"
One day that Tom Walker had been to a distant part of the neighborhood, he took what he considered a short-cut homeward, through the swamp. Like most short-cuts, it was an ill-chosen route. The swamp was thickly grown with great, gloomy pines and hemlocks, some of them ninety feet high, which made it dark at noonday and a retreat for all the owls of the neighborhood. It was full of pits and quagmires, partly covered with weeds a mosses, where the green surface often betrayed the traveler into a gulf of black, mothering mud; there were also dark and stagnant pools, the abodes of the tadpole, the bull-frog, and the water-snake, where the trunks of pines and hemlocks lay half-drowned, half-rotting, looking like alligators sleeping in the mire.Â

So the next night, after midnight, four men crossed Miss Emily's lawn and slunk about the house like burglars, sniffing along the base of the brickwork and at the cellar openings while one of them performed a regular sowing motion with his hand out of a sack slung from his shoulder. They broke open the cellar door and sprinkled lime there, and in all the outbuildings. As they're crossed the lawn, a window that had been dark was lighted and Miss Emily sat in it, the light behind her, and her upright torso motionless as that of an idol. They crept quietly across the lawn and into the shadow of the locusts that lined the street. After a week or two the smell went away.

From that time on her front door remained closed, save for a period of six or seven years, when she was about forty, during which she gave lessons in china-painting. Meanwhile her taxes had been remitted.

School uniforms present both advantages and disadvantages within educational settings. One benefit of school uniforms is the reduction of social pressure related to clothing choices, as all students are required to wear the same attire regardless of economic background. This uniformity can foster a sense of community and equality among students, potentially decreasing bullying or judgment based on appearance. Additionally, uniforms simplify the morning routine and may promote a more focused academic environment by minimizing distractions related to fashion trends.
However, school uniforms also limit opportunities for students to express individuality through personal style. Clothing often serves as a form of self-expression, and mandatory uniforms restrict this creative outlet. Furthermore, some uniforms may be uncomfortable or unsuitable for varying weather conditions, leading to physical discomfort throughout the school day. While intended to reduce costs, school uniforms can still place a financial burden on families who must purchase specific clothing items in addition to other educational expenses. As a result, some argue that a flexible dress code would balance the need for appropriate attire with the desire for personal expression.

Cell phones can be really harmful to mental health because they make it easy to compare yourself to others online. Social media shows people’s “perfect” lives, and it can make someone feel like they’re not good enough. Also, being on a phone too much can lead to less sleep since people stay up late scrolling or texting. Not getting enough sleep can make someone feel more stressed or anxious during the day. Plus, always checking notifications can make it hard to focus or relax because it feels like there’s always something new to respond to. Over time, all of this can add up and make mental health worse.
